456 RACE ST, CHARLESTON, SC – Property Video
Welcome home to this charming freedman’s cottage built in the early 1900’s in an area of the peninsula once known as Hope Place. According to the cottage’s history, it is among 4 residences built by a woman who rented the properties out. Flowers once grown in the garden of the cottage’s large backyard were sold at the City Market. The cottage has been restored by the current owners who in 2007 rebuilt the piers & all of the floor joists, removed the sheetrock from the bead-board walls and pulled down the acoustic tile stapled to the ceiling. They also updated the plumbing, replaced the gas lines & electric system, replaced the roof and installed heart pine floors from re-milled timbers that once were part of a cotton mill. The kitchen, which at one time was actually the back porch, is truly the showpiece of this historic property. The original overhang of the old porch’s roof is artfully displayed in the kitchen. The reclaimed heart pine floors have been refinished and all of the walls were reconstructed using wood found there or elsewhere in the house. The kitchen features custom-built cherry cabinets, made by a local cabinet maker and are designed to look like furniture, a nod to the period in which the house was built. The cabinets are dyed, not painted, leaving the grains exposed and the counters are made of butcher block. A 4-burner gas stove and stainless steel fridge also grace the kitchen. The main living area is bright and sunny and the many windows allow much natural light to flow through. The bathroom features a claw foot tub with the modern convenience of a rain shower head as well as a hand held device. Original reclaimed doors and antique hardware clan be found throughout the cottage. There are ceiling fans in both bedrooms, as well as in the main living area and bamboo flooring can be found in the front bedroom. A new HVAC was installed in 2008, along with a tankless water heater and low flow toilets. Did I mention the off street parking and large backyard with fire pit and plenty of room to garden or entertain? |

Classic Hampton Park Terrace home owned by the same family for 50 years. Home currently features 4 bedroom and 2 bath with a 1 story addition on the rear of the home that the family used as a master bedroom in later years. Lovely street presence and very nice sized lot. Home is an estate sale and will convey totally as/is, however, home appears to be very solid. Current flood zone X. Ask your agent for flood map details . This is one of Charleston’s most desirable neighborhoods and is close to all area conveniences including the Arthur Christopher Community Center, Herbert Hazel pool, city tennis courts, The Citadel, The Joe and of course Hampton and Allan Parks. The Uptown area is also becoming the center of activity for new restaurants with Lee Lees, The Park Cafe, Edmunds Oast and several others in the works. Ask your agent about Harold’s Cabin – a fresh food market/restaurant planned for the corner of President and Congress. ~ |
